The Legend of the Lough Sprint Triathlon, will take place in the grounds of the Shanes Castle Estate with the start and finish areas against the backdrop of the castle ruins on the shores of Lough Neagh.

Shanes Castle is a working estate consisting of 800 acres of farmland and 1000 acres of woodland. Dating back to at least the 17th century, the castle is a popular backdrop to various farming and cultural events, and has featured in episodes of the hugely successful HBO series, Game of Thrones.

The estate is still operated by direct descendants of the O’Neill family. 

SWIM

The 750m swim will take place to the rear of the castle ruins in the waters of Lough Neagh.

The T1/T2 transition area will be located beside the standalone castle tower, approximately 200m from the water’s edge.

BIKE

The bike leg, measuring 20km, will consist of two loops around the mixed-surface farm lanes and tracks of the estate, traversing two of Ireland’s oldest rubble masonry bridges, Dunmore and Deerpack. Route surfaces dictate that only bikes with OFFROAD TYRES will be permitted.

RUN

Concluding with a flat 5k run, out and back on a paved lane towards Antrim Castle, the finish area will be in front of the spectacular Shanes Castle main ruins.

The event will adopt a ‘Leave no trace’ policy and the race will act as a fundrasing event for our nominated club charity, the Air Ambulance NI.
